There's A Great Day Coming

“Behold days are coming,” declares the Lord… (Jeremiah 23:5)

Will L. Thompson wrote the popular hymn “There’s a Great Day Coming” nearly one hundred years ago. Within the text of the hymn, several positions before the Lord are examined. Ultimately the song builds to the refrain “Are you ready?”

For the faithful Christian, the simple answer to that question is a hearty yes. All of his affairs are in order; his stance before God is justified by the righteousness of His only begotten Son. He knows the requirement is fidelity unto death (Rev. 2:10) and when he has fallen, has confessed his sin to God (1 John 1:9).

Perhaps Thompson used the common biblical phrase “days are coming” as the genesis point for his lyrical inspiration. The phrase is prevalent throughout the Bible, but especially in the book of Jeremiah (15 of 23 uses). The phrase is the beacon of hope for the God-fearer. Despite the onslaught of God against sinners, there’s a great day coming for His people.

This day is seen thru the abiding virtue of Christian hope. Christians everywhere look toward redemption and toward that home of Heaven where the saints will praise Him forever. The day where tears are dried, sorrows are quenched, and physical limitations are eliminated. So the question is: are you ready?
