Meditations Of The Heart (Ps. 40:12)

For innumerable evils have surrounded me; my iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to look up; they are more than the hairs of my head; therefore my heart fails me. (Ps 40:12)

Many psalms address the effect of sin upon our spiritual and emotional well-being. David writes many of these sentiments, and the Bible well documents his faults. A burdened conscience, a pervasive sense of unworthiness, our perpetual shortcomings – these can be debilitating and lead us away from God if not resolved.

Sometimes we feel the impact of a major moral break-down. Though we may say, “one sin is no different from another,” this is not true in all respects. Adultery and uttering a curse word are both sins, but make no mistake: they are different in their effects upon others, their damage to one’s reputation, and in our own self-assessment. Adultery and consequent murder are the sins that David is most remembered for (cf. 1 Kgs 15:5).

But sometimes despair arises from the sense that we just don’t measure up. Either way, relief is found in mercy.
