Meditations Of The Heart (Ps. 37:7-8)

Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him; do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass. Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; do not fret – it only causes harm. (Ps 37:7-8)

We live in the “Information Age,” which means we some-times know too much for our own good. The news is full of stories about crooks, swindlers and cheats, felons who rape, rob and pillage the innocent. Today’s headlines tell of an FBI sting that liberated child sex slaves across the country; baseball’s scandal of performance enhancing drugs; the attempt to push Detroit pensioners off on the federal government; etc. “Follow the money trail” seems cynical, but it is usually sound advice.

When we fret over the evil of this world, the psalm advises us to trust in God and let Him handle such affairs. No matter how long we live, the headlines will always read the same. We can worry ourselves sick, or we can focus on our own sphere of influence and try to make things better: “A little that a righteous man has is better than the riches of many wicked” (Ps 37:16).
