The Ultimate King of Kings

On His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords. (Revelation 19:16)

The ESV uses the title “king of kings” only six times. The title is fairly self-explanatory. A king is someone who has total authority over a kingdom. A king of kings is a king who rules supreme over all other kings and kingdoms. The biblical title therefore indicates unrivaled power.

The name is used three times in the Bible to describe mortal rulers. Artaxerxes used the title to head an authoritative decree allowing for Ezra and the remnant to rebuild the Temple (Ezra 7:12). Daniel and Ezekiel used it to describe the matchless power of Nebuchadnezzar (Dan. 2:37; Ezek. 26:7). The other three uses of this designation (1Tim. 6:15; Rev. 17:14; 19:16) indicate God’s overarching power.

God’s greater authority as the ultimate King of kings requires that the entire Earth bow before His throne. He is worthy of utmost respect as the ruler of Creation. Simply put, the world owes God allegiance. More specifically, Christians owe God their allegiance. As a citizen of the divine kingdom, you can fulfill your duty by making service to God your primary objective for today. If you live for Him now, then you will reign with Him in Heaven.
