God of All Comfort

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort (2Cor. 1:10)

The most heavily-saturated section in the Bible concerning comfort is found in 2 Corinthians 1. The reasoning for this may be the rampant immorality and spiritual uncleanness that plagued the congregation. They took each other to court to settle differences. They were crippled by divisiveness. They neglected to discipline a brother for practicing incest. Wherever they looked, sin reared its ugly face.

Despite the grave sins that had been committed at Corinth, Paul assures them of God’s tender love and care as they sought to correct their sinful behavior. He calls God merciful and emphasizes His fatherly oversight. While the Corinthians wondered where God was, Paul knew.

God is ever present with us; He does not forsake His children (Deut. 31:8). He is a wall of fire around His children and they are the apple of His eye (Zech. 2:5, 8). So despite outward decay and spiritual assault, we have assurance the Lord cares and knows all of our struggles. He comforts us in all our affliction so that we may be able to comfort those who undergo similar distress (2Cor. 1:4).
