Proverbs To Live By (30:5-6)

Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him. Do not add to His words, lest He reprove you, and you be found a liar.

When people find themselves at odds with the Scriptures, the tendency is to whittle away here, shoehorn in there or otherwise alter what God has said. Several things are wrong about this response.

First, God chose what He wanted to reveal to man. There is not one extraneous word of revelation, and there is not a word omitted that God wanted known. We have to deal with the words that are in the divine record whether we like them or not.

Second, do we think we know better than God? Is our judgment better? Are we smarter than the One who craft-ed an entire universe out of nothing? If we cannot be sure how to invest our savings in an unstable financial market, how can we untangle moral issues without God’s help?

Finally, we express trust in God by taking His word as it stands. In spite of what others say, altering His word is the ultimate sign of distrust in the Almighty.
