Person Of The Week: Joseph

Various of the sons of Jacob are interesting in their own right, but the scriptures focus upon the story of Joseph. In fact, his life covers approximately 25 percent of the book of Genesis. Joseph’s story is inspiring and encouraging. It shows the resiliency of the human spirit, the depth of faith and the power of forgiveness.

Further, Joseph’s life is a labyrinth of twists and turns that highlight the providential control of God over earthly events. From the selling of Joseph by his brothers into slavery to the false accusations and imprisonment, from the interpretation of the dreams of Pharaoh’s servants to the elevation of Joseph to the chief minister over Egypt, the hand of God is present at every juncture to ensure that His will carries the day.

Of course, Joseph gives God much to work with. His godly attitude, positive outlook, moral purity and natural ability make him a useful tool in the hand of his Creator. Through Joseph’s influence, the first part of the promise to Abraham is realized: 70 of his descendants go into Egypt, and after centuries of “incubation” a nation perhaps several million strong comes out -- and Joseph’s indomitable faith made it possible.

Joseph should inspire us to overcome setbacks, to let go of bitterness, to do the best we can with our present circumstances and to trust in God to use us in the framework of His will.
