Word Of The Week: Bible

It may surprise you to learn that the word “Bible” is not in the Bible-- at least not in its anglicized form. The word literally means “books,” and it came from the word for the bark of the papyrus plant, used as ancient writing material.

Over time the collected “books” of inspiration were referred to as the singular “book” -- the Bible. And so the Bible is “a book” composed of 66 “books” from a variety of genre -- history, poetry, personal letters, etc.

But the one thing these “books” have in common is their divine origin. Though diverse in literary style, they tell a common story of God’s interaction with man and the plan He implemented to restore fellowship with His sinful creatures.

The Bible is not just one literary masterpiece among others. It is the key to our relationship with God and the fulfillment of our purpose in this life.

Do you own a Bible? Or better yet, does your Bible own you? Is it rooted deep within your heart and bearing fruit?
