A Sense of Purpose

One of the richest blessings of life may also be one of the most overlooked.  Most humans desperately desire a clear sense of purpose.  Emmitt Smith, former Dallas Cowboy running back, was recently reflecting on his post NFL life.  He has enough money to last him a lifetime of extravagant indulgence, but he is the head of several charitable foundations and businesses that keep him on the go.  He said there is more to life than playing golf in exotic locations.  True, that.

But not many of us make tens of millions of dollars in our career that we can parley into a multi-corporate portfolio.  We don’t need to.  We can serve the One who owns the whole universe.  He provides the “investment capital” that allows us to make a real difference in this world.  Every day, no matter what else is happening in our lives, we can wake with the purpose of:

Teaching someone a spiritual truth. This can be done any number of ways, but if we can convey just one true thing in a world of deceit and meaningless chatter it is a good day.

Encouraging someone who is weak. Life is hard and sometimes it beats us up.  But if I can speak a few words to someone to lift them up and remind them of God it is a good day.

Worshiping and honoring God. We have a special chance to do this on the Lord’s day, but anytime we can praise God for His  power, glory and mercy it is a good day.  Make today a good day by fulfilling the purpose God for which God made you.
