Worship as Pleases Us?!

I grabbed this comment from an internet posting.  It was in response to an article critical of using musical instruments in worship:

“If it is right in a man's heart to worship with instruments, if in his heart he wants to worship the Lord with a piano or guitar, then let him do so because this is the way he worships God.  If another man believes in his heart the way to worship God is only with his voice, then let him do that as well.  We get into trouble when we argue one man's heart versus another’s.  It is a condition of the heart.  No man is wrong in this case if they worship what they believe.”

This is typical.  The respondent acts as if God has had nothing to say on the subject and justifies himself with the “in my heart” rationale.  That is, if I feel it in my heart, if it pleases me, then that is the major criteria of whether it is acceptable to God.

This issue isn’t about instrumental music per se.  It is about an attitude.  So many so-called Christians have “drunk the Kool-Aid” of “do what you want to do” religion.  It’s all about me, what I like, not about God’s right to define His own worship.

Scripture describes another generation where “everyone did what was right in their own eyes” (Jud 17:6; 18:1; 19:1; 21:25). It did not go well with them.  It never does when we ignore God’s instruction and offer to Him whatever we please.
