Important Questions - 15

“Is anything too hard for the Lord?” (Genesis 18:14)

This rhetorical question posed by the Lord to Abraham follows a previous question:  “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Shall I surely bear a child, since I am old?’”  Sarah had overheard from inside her tent the promise that she would soon bear a child to Abraham.  Her immediate reaction was a skeptical laugh which, though uttered in private, was known by God.

God’s chiding question about His limitless power reveals the struggle finite humans have in comprehending God’s omnipotence.  Intellectually, we seem to accept that God created a universe, solar system and planet that are delicately balanced so as to support life.  We marvel at the intricacies of our body and mind.  We even accept at face value the various miracles in Scripture worked by the representatives of God.

Yet, when it comes to the challenges we personally face, it is easy to let anxiety and fear cloud our minds.  We may question how God can possibly turn our present crisis into a blessing.  While we may occasionally wonder what God may do, let us never doubt that God can do anything that suits Him.  Dare to pray for great things, for God’s power is limitless.
