Important Questions - 1

“But who do you say that I am?”  (Luke 9:20)

We begin this series of articles with THE most important question of all.  It is a question from the very lips of Jesus, and while it was originally posed to His disciples, the eternal fate of every person depends on his or her answer to the same question.

There was controversy about the identity of Jesus when He was alive.  Jesus prefaced this question with:  “Who do the crowds say that I am?  So they answered and said, ‘John the Baptist, but some say Elijah; and others say that one of the old prophets has risen again’” (Lk 9:18-19).  Jesus’ peers knew that He was significant, but they had trouble settling their minds on a precise identity.

Likewise, modern ideas of Jesus’ identity cover a wide spectrum, but the main point is that all will respond to the question.  To refuse or neglect careful thought on it is itself a decision – a “can’t unring the bell” matter.  Jesus has claimed to be the Savior of men and the only hope of eternal life.  What do you think of Him?  Devil?  Deceiver?  Demented?  Peter’s answer:  “You are the Christ of God.”
