A Wet Cell Phone

“Pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17)

Taking a break from the office chair, I placed my laptop on the bar in our small apartment kitchen. It’s perfect height for when I am typing up notes for a class. Being the product of the technology age, I of course kept my cell within hands reach. While typing, I turned to look at a commentary and my arm brushed my cell phone, it began to slide, and inevitably fell into the egg pan that was soaking from breakfast. Mortified, I grabbed for my phone with zero hesitation and within nanoseconds, my precious communication device was out of the water and ready for the rice. Over the next few days, my phone glitched and acted weird, but now seems to be back in full functioning order. I have the convenient means by which to stay in touch with family, friends, and colleagues.

I marveled at my concern for my phone and began to wonder if my concern for my communication with God was even comparable. If threatened with losing that means of communication, would I scramble to save it like I had for my phone?

Numerous passages detail how prayers may be interrupted due to various causes in our lives. One common example is found in Isaiah 1:15 - “So when you spread out your hands in prayer, I will hide My eyes from you; Yes, even though you multiply prayers, I will not listen. Your hands are covered with blood.”

Our communication with God is an invaluable asset. May we do everything within our power to prevent that device from plunging into the cesspool of sin and if it does, may we snatch it immediately out.
