Meditations of the Heart (Ps. 71:9, 18)

Do not cast me off in the time of old age; do not forsake me when my strength fails … No also when I am old and grayheaded, O God, do not forsake me, until I declare Your strength to this generation. (Ps 71:9, 18)

We at Centreville are predominantly a young group. But many of us have aging family members, and some have had to say goodbye to parents and grandparents. In our dark humor we sometimes comment that growing old, even with all its challenges, is “better than the alternative.”

But if “by reason of strength” we live into our 80’s or beyond (Ps 90:10), we will likely suffer some breakdown of body and mind. Our independence will decrease. Our usefulness will be limited. Our peer circle will dwindle.

Depressing?  Not if we have continued to love God and draw closer to Him: “Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day”(2 Corinthians 4:16). It is true for all: each day of life is one day closer to heaven. But some of us are closer to home than others.
