Blessed Are The Persecuted

Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Matt. 5:10)

Association with a man regarded as a criminal is bound to produce a negative stigma. A stigma that will occasionally be coupled with a reign of terror against God’s elect. While walking and talking with His disciples here on Earth, Jesus was forthcoming about societal disregard for those following in His stead. In this Beatitude, He promises that suffering for the kingdom is rewarded.

Peter expands on the application of this Beatitude more clearly: “Who is there to harm you if you prove zealous for what is good? But even if you should suffer for the sake of righteousness, you are blessed. And do not fear their intimidation, and do not be troubled…For it is better, if God should will it so, that you suffer for doing what is right rather than for doing what is wrong” (1Pet. 3:13-17).

Christ revealed that persecution is the result of antagonism toward godliness. Envy, malice, and strife are shrouded with feelings of superiority and egos that culminate in our ill treatment.  Yet we must not lose hope in the form of eternal relief Having that promise, let us press on!
