Blessed Are The Pure in Heart

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. (Matt. 5:8)

The word “blessed” in the Beatitudes comes from the Greek word makarios and may also be translated “happy”. When reading through the Beatitudes, we must remember that one of Jesus’ main points is that lasting joy results from the possession of certain Christ-like attributes.

In this beatitude, Jesus calls attention to the happiness that will be realized by those who retain pure hearts. The pure in heart will have the pleasure of SEEING God! In contrast, John writes: “No one has ever seen God at any time…” (John 1:18).  Thus, those who get to see God would be doing something utterly unique.  They do something far surpassing anything ever accomplished by mere mortals. But only those washed by the Spirit and sanctified by truth receive that reward. Christians are blessed with that wonderful privilege because of God’s intervention. He has created perfectly new hearts in us.

Remember to hold fast to the integrity of your heart so that one day you may be blessed with the full revelation of God’s presence. Then your happiness shall be realized.
