Meditations Of The Heart (Ps. 31:5)

Into Your hand I commit my spirit; You have redeemed me, O Lord God of truth. (Ps. 31:5)

Old Testament passages are often written with dual or even multiple applications. A prophecy, for example, can have a short-term fulfillment followed by a distant event that captures the complete meaning of the Scripture.

David is the author of the above psalm, and in it he declares his firm trust in God. He begins, “In You, O Lord, I put my trust …” (31:1), and later, “But as for me, I trust in You, O Lord” (31:14). David also calls God “my rock of refuge, a fortress of defense” (31:2); “my strength” (31:4); “my God” (31:14).

But it is David’s declaration in 31:5 that is of particular interest: “Into Your hand I commit my spirit.” When Jesus was letting go of His earthly life, He chose these words above all others to express His trust in God’s care (Lk 23:46). They are words worthy to be spoken by every man and woman, for only our loving Father can adequately care for us in life and especially in death.
