Proverbs To Live By (12:15)

The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man is he who listens to counsel.

All of us have the tendency to think our own views are correct. We make hundreds of choices every day based on generally held beliefs and values. We fancy ourselves to be rational, consistent and possessed of the purest of motives. And perhaps we are – most of the time.

But problems arise when we think too highly of our judgment, when we assume that we cannot be wrong. This leads to pushing our agendas, shutting out dissenting views and refusing to admit our faults. We stop listening to (or seeking) advice. The proverb says that this is foolish.

The truth is that all of us have blind spots and deficiencies that can lead us into trouble. However, the truly wise person is the one who knows his limitations and seeks input and guidance. This is not weakness, for no CEO, president, coach, elder, father or other leader knows everything.

Wisdom seeks wise counsel and is humble enough to accept it, for we should want only the best for ourselves and others.
