Word Of The Week: Glory

Glory is one of those words we might recognize but may be hard-pressed to define. As a personal attribute, glory rightly belongs to God and God alone. It refers to the manifestation of God in any form, for His very being is honorable, powerful, pure and magnificent. For example, Christ’s life shows the glory of God: “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14).

In ancient times God’s glory was sometimes shown in physical ways. When Moses came down from Mt. Sinai, “the glory of his countenance” was visibly evident (II Cor. 3:7). Moses was literally glowing from his contact with God. God’s glory was seen in miracles, judgments and implements of worship (the ark, for instance).

It is difficult for man to grasp the glory of God, but try we must. We must think on a higher plane, to see by faith the splendor of our Creator. To take Him for granted, as so many in our society do, is to lose perspective on both this life and eternity. The glory of God should humble us.
