Word Of The Week: Redeem

If your car has ever been towed or your wheel clamped, then you know the basic meaning of the word “redeem.” To redeem something is to pay a “ransom” to “free” it from “bondage.” The price you pay is the redemption price.

While having your car towed can be a traumatic experience, bondage to sin is a much more serious matter. Jesus came to redeem us from the imprisonment to Satan that sin causes. When we sin, we spiritually “sell our soul” to the devil; we turn ourselves over to him and the eternal death that awaits him and those who belong to him. And the really bad part is that we can do nothing to redeem ourselves.

Enter Jesus, “who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed” (Titus 2:14). To secure our freedom, Jesus paid the price we owed: death. It was a terrible price to pay, but He was willing to do so.

Each sinner must willingly receive that redemptive price through faith. But why wouldn’t we? Jesus died to free all men from their eternal bondage to Satan. What person in his or her right mind wouldn't want that freedom?
