Word Of The Week: Mediator

A mediator is one who intervenes during a dispute or argument. The goal of a mediator is to bring about peace between the two parties and sometimes to plead for mercy on behalf of a weaker party.

The Scriptures give us powerful examples of those who mediate. First, consider Moses. While Moses was on Mount Sinai receiving the Law from God, the people of Israel began worshipping idols and incurred God’s wrath (Ex. 32:1-6). But when God threatened to destroy the people, Moses stepped in and pleaded that the Lord would remember His promises. God relented and the people were saved because of Moses' intercession (Ex. 32:7-14).

But Moses was only a shadow of Jesus Christ, who would serve as the perfect mediator between God and us. When we come before God in our sinful state, we can only cry out like Isaiah: "Woe is me! For I am lost" (Is. 6:5).

But through God's plan Jesus paid the price for our wicked deeds, and He is able to come and plead to God on our behalf (Heb. 4:14-16). "Consequently, He is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them" (Heb. 7:25).

Praise God for such a mediator!
