Word Of The Week: Hell

Various polls taken from time to time usually show that many people believe in heaven but relatively few believe in hell. This is a bit strange given that the only source of true knowledge about these, the Bible, speaks of them both.

In fact, Jesus Himself speaks most about hell. In a famous passage that warns us to sacrifice anything that would cost us our soul, Jesus said: “And if your hand makes you sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed, than having two hands, to go to hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched -- where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched" (Mark 9:43-44).

Hell is consistently portrayed as a place of punishment and torment, a miserable outcome for those who reject God or those who are merely indifferent toward Him. Such people will be banished from heaven ultimately because they did not avail themselves of the sacrifice for sin that God has provided -- the death of His Son.

The inevitability of our own death and the possibility of what lies beyond should make us take a sober look at the reality of hell -- and the hope of heaven.
