Word Of The Week: Angel

The broadest meaning of the term “angel” is a messenger, one sent to speak or act on behalf of another. The most common reference is to a class of beings in heaven who serve God.

Further, angels are “ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation” (Heb. 1:14). The Bible tells of angels making appearances to men and announcing messages from God or even taking extreme actions, such as destroying Sodom (Genesis 19) or releasing apostles from prison (Acts 5:19-20). These things they do under God’s direction.

Such stories -- and popular TV shows -- lead many to believe in “guardian angels,” the idea that everyone has an angelic protector. While this may be comforting, it goes beyond the Scriptures.

Furthermore, there is nothing to suggest that angels are still making appearances on the earth in human form. These occasions were rare and usually taught very specific lessons to those to whom they were sent.

God still may accomplish His will through angels, but what is more important is that He has the means to help us in whatever way we need it. While angels inspire curiosity and wonder, they are not to be worshiped (Rev. 22:8-9). Let us not overemphasize angels and forget God.
