Word Of The Week: Christianity

Interestingly, Christianity is not a word found in the Bible. It is a word coined by men to describe the whole body of Christians, but a more biblical expression would be “church” (Eph. 1:22) or “assembly” (Heb. 12:23) or “the Way” (Acts 9:2; 24:14, 22).

One problem with the word Christianity is the concept that Christians are divided into many competing sects, each with its own organizational structure, doctrines, worship, etc. Others may equate Christianity with Catholicism, as, from the world’s point of view, the Catholic Church was the dominant religious and political force for many centuries.

But true Christians are not identified by organizational affiliation. Rather, they have truly “put on Christ” (Gal. 3:27) and are “led by the Spirit of God” (Rom. 8:14).  Many are included in the term Christianity who may not truly be God’s people.
