Proverbs 11:27

He that diligently seeketh good procureth favour: but he that seeketh mischief, it shall come unto him.

About Us

In this day and time one never knows what he or she will find when visiting a house of worship. It can be very unsettling to enter a strange building among unfamiliar people whose worship you may not understand. This preview is designed to acquaint you with the beliefs and practices of the Centreville church so that, if you visit with us, you will have an idea of what to expect.

What kind of people are we?

The members of the Centreville church of Christ are ordinary people. We are school teachers, accountants and government workers; we are doctors, homemakers and computer specialists. Some are mature in years, but many of us are younger families with children of all ages. We enjoy ethnic diversity. Some have roots in the D.C. area while others are “transplants” from all over the U.S. In short, we are just ordinary folks.

Through this diversity runs a common thread which binds us together: the Christians here are family and are concerned with helping each other get to heaven. We are not perfect by any means, but we are trying to grow spiritually and be more of what God wants us to be.

What is our worship like?

Our worship of God is not designed to be flashy entertainment. Rather, it is a reverent and dignified offering of the heart in accordance with Biblical guidelines. We sing without the aid of musical instruments because the New Testament specifies this kind of music (Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16). The Lord’s Supper is observed every Sunday according to the practice of early Christians (Acts 20:7). Prayers are offered by the congregation (1 Timothy 2:1-3).

A contribution of funds into a common account is made by the members of the church every Sunday (1 Corinthians 16:1-2). We do not solicit funds from those outside the church. It is our privilege and responsibility to provide for the work which Jesus wants us to do (2 Corinthians 9:6-8). We also have a sermon at both services on Sunday designed to give Bible instruction and to help make meaningful applications to daily life (Acts 2:42). May we also add that children are welcome in our assembly. We believe it is important for them to see adults worship God.

Our view of the Bible

We believe that the Bible is the inspired word of God; that is, both the Old and New Testaments were revealed directly from heaven, written by men whom God chose and preserved intact through the centuries (2 Timothy 3:16-17). The Bible is not out-dated and irrelevant to the needs of modern society. The New Testament, the covenant we live under today, contains divine commands and timeless truths which govern our lives, from the principles of forgiveness of sin to how to worship acceptably to how to build a lasting marriage. The Bible teaches us who God is and what He expects from us. We cannot honor God without also respecting His word (Luke 6:46).

Our view of Jesus

We believe that Jesus Christ was more than a humanitarian, wise teacher or a prophet. The Bible teaches that Jesus was God living in a human body, Immanuel – God with us (Matthew 1:23; John 1:1-5, 14). As a divine being, Jesus’ death provided the basis of forgiveness for the sins of all mankind (John 3:16; Romans 5:6-10). The resurrection of Jesus from the dead provides hope for existence beyond this earthly life (John 5:28-29; 1 Corinthians 15:50-57). Jesus is now exalted in heaven and has all authority over heaven and earth (1 Peter 3:22; Ephesians 1:20-23). As our Savior and King, Jesus is to be honored and obeyed.

In honor of our Savior, who loved us and gave Himself for us (Galatians 2:20), we call ourselves “Christians” (Acts 11:26) and we refer to ourselves as a church of Christ (Romans 16:16). His death established His church of saved people, and we consider ourselves to be part of that church, nothing more and nothing less.

What are you looking for in a church?

Many people have come to see churches as full service organizations, sort of like a Wal-Mart where you can get your eyes checked, pick up some motor oil and do your banking all at one location. Many churches now offer such diverse services as secular education, financial advice, recreational activities, musical entertainment and other items of worldly interest.

Sadly, it seems that few are truly searching for a church that will help them understand the word of God more clearly, enable them to worship reverently and selflessly serve the needs of others. The church at Centreville seeks to be that kind of church, modeled after the teaching of the New Testament and the examples of churches that we can read about in the first century. If you value the kind of principles outlined in this short article, we will be happy to talk to you, study with you from the Bible or assist you in any way as you seek to learn more about God and bring your life into harmony with His will.
